They are not suitable for guard work, although their size and appearance alone will usually discourage intruders. Malamutes are patient with children but, like all large dogs, should be supervised during play. Renowned for being the legendary freighting dog of polar expeditions, the breed also served the military with valor in both World Wars. A cold weather breed, the Malamute has adapted well to warmer climates. Malamutes require plenty of outdoor exercise, especially in cold weather, making them a great choice for dog lovers who enjoy cold weather sporting activities. Males stand about 25 inches at the shoulder and weigh approximately 85 pounds; females are usually two inches and 10 pounds less. Malamutes sport a coat that is light grey to black in color with white markings. Regular brushing is required to keep the thick, coarse double coat in good shape. Malamutes are not the dog for everyone. Before considering owning one of these magnificent dogs, it is important to do your homework to ensure that you are ready, willing and able to take on the responsibilities that go along with ownership. Malamute ownership is a privilege - not a right.

Breed Group: Herding Dogs Good With Kids: Yes Exercise Needs: Moderate Grooming: Demanding The bearded collie probably originated in Scotland and northern England in the 16th century. Cairn Terrier Puppies For Sale & Adoption Near You
Cairn Terrier History: The Cairn Terrier is a tiny terrier originated in the Western Highlands and Islands of Scotland, where it was originally called the "Short-Haired Skye Terrier", and is considered to be the oldest of the British Terrier breeds. They are active and intelligent and full of fun! They are quite active and need to be given plenty of opportunity to exercise, preferably a safely fenced, outdoor area to play in. Cairn Terrier Physical Description: Cairn Terriers stand about 10 inches at the shoulder and have a thick, harsh coat that comes in a variety of shades. Regular combing is required to remove dead hair, and occasional "hand-stripping" is also recommended to keep the outline of your Cairn Terrier's coat trim.

Cavaliers are a great choice for families, singles, elderly or disabled dog-lovers, and people who live in the city! Country of Origin: United Kingdom Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Breed History: Once the favorite breed of King Charles II of England, the small sporting spaniel was first dubbed the King Charles Spaniel. Then oriental breeds came into fashion and breeders began crossbreeding the spaniels to achieve a more snub-nosed, round-headed look. In 1926, a wealthy American visited England in search of the small spaniels so often seen in portraits of King Charles. But there were none. So he offered monetary prizes to be awarded at the famed Crufts Dog Show for the male and female most closely resembling the original King Charles Spaniel. British breeders rose to the occasion and by 1945, the recreated breed had arrived. To avoid confusion with the now-snub-nosed King Charles Spaniels, the breed was named the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel since Charles was known as the Cavalier King. The Cavalier breed was developed by selective breeding of long-snouted King Charles Spaniels (also known as English Toy Spaniels). The development of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was partly due to a desire to produce a long-nosed toy spaniel, as are seen in the paintings of the great masters. Long-snouted toy spaniels no longer existed at the beginning of the 20th century, due to crosses between long-snouted toy spaniels and short-snouted breeds such as the Pug or Japanese Chin in the 18th-19th century. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Breed Description: Height/Weight: The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel stands 12-13 in (30-33 cm) in height and weighs approximately 12-18 lb (5.5-8 kg). Coat: The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel coat is long, silky and may have a slight wave. To add to its endearing appearance, the Cavalier carries feathering on the ears, legs, feet and tail. Color: Four color variations are found in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed. Blenheim is a pearly white background with bright-red-chestnut markings. The tri-colour has jet-black markings on a white background with tan markings over the eyes, on the cheeks, inside the ears, legs and under the tail. Ruby is a whole-coloured rich red. Black-and-tan is jet black with tan markings. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Breed Temperament: The breed is highly affectionate, and some have called the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel 'the ultimate lap dog'. Gentle and affectionate with a happy, sporting and fearless nature, the Cavalier is known as a wonderful companion. Indeed the breed was known as the "Comforter" or the "Spaniel Gentle" in the early days of its history. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels require a great deal of human companionship, and do not do well if left alone for long periods of time. Cavaliers, when properly trained, have wonderful manners, and many are welcomed in the workplace. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Breed Exercise Requirements: Though playful and alert, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a born lapdog whose exercise requirements are easily satisfied. It is relatively quiet and calm-natured. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Breed Grooming Requirements: The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a silky coat that requires only brushing to keep it neat. No trimming is needed. Cockapoos have been recognized by the American people as a very special cross since about 1960; they have been purposely breed since the 1950's. Cockapoos vary in size and color - there are no requirements of conformity in either. Both size and color are determined genetically from the parents, so the resulting Cockapoo puppy will be a cross that resembles both of its parents and their recent heritage. Smaller Cockapoos down to almost toy size can be had from toy poodles and small cockers; conversely larger Cockapoos from mid size to giant can result from larger cockers and mini or standard poodles. Color will mix according to the parents also - and Cockapoos can be solid, phantom or parti-colored. Cockapoos are considered 1st generation if the parents are pure cocker spaniel and pure poodle. Cockapoo to Cockapoo is 2nd generation and beyond. They are still Cockapoos as long as the origin of the Cockapoo pedigree line was 1/2 cocker and 1/2 poodle and nothing else has been mixed in along the way, and it stays Cockapoo to Cockapoo without adding back in any poodle or cocker. Cockapoos will almost always show strong characteristics of both parents, but they definitely show both parents in a unique way that gives Cockapoos such a special look. In getting the best of both worlds Cockapoos acquire a keen intelligence, more from the poodle (which has consistently ranked among the worlds smartest dogs ) than from the cocker (which is not a criticism, but cockers are not noted for high intelligence). Cockapoos get some sturdiness from the cocker - this is not to say the poodle is fragile but cockers have heavier bone structure. The hair coat of the Cockapoo tends to be wavy but not as tightly curled as the poodle nor absolutely straight like some cockers. Poodles are noted for longevity as are hybrids giving the Cockapoo a double dose of longevity. Cockapoos are also noted for their wonderful dispositioin and great tolerance of indiscretions, with a very forgiving nature. They are great with children. The indeterminate hair type of the poodle ( continuous growth ) contributes the low to no shedding characteristic to the Cockapoo, while the cocker adds some silkiness. The resulting hair type is also very low allergenic - without an undercoat producing excess dander. Most people with allergies to other dogs find that they can tolerate a Cockapoo with minimum or any discomfort from their usual symptoms. Thus, for people wanting a low to no odor and low to no shedding, highly intelligent dog that is easy to train and absolutely wonderful for children of all ages, playful and energetic but easy to care for, and that will be around for a while, the ideal dog is the Cockapoo.

Cockapoo Puppy Listings

These fluffy and fun little dogs originated in Madagascar, and details on how they arrived there are somewhat sketchy. Some say the breed descended from dogs that accompanied troops of the Indian Company settling on the island of Madagascar, while others believe that dogs who swam ashore provided the foundation for this unique breed, which dates back as far as the 15th century. Beautifully proportioned and symmetrically balanced, the Coton De Tulear is now known as the Royal Dog of Madagascar, and is even depicted on postage stamps from the island. The Coton was recognized by the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 1971, and has since found it's way into the hearts and homes of dog lovers all over the world. Cotons are happy, lively, affectionate and playful - traits that make them sought-after by families, singles and elderly people alike. Cotons love to please their owners, and are intelligent and easily trained. They develop strong bonds with their human counterparts, and love to be part of a family. Their fondness of children is without equal, making the Coton De Tulear an excellent choice for families with children. Cotons stand 10 to 12-1/2 inches, and weigh about nine to 14 pounds. Despite it's appearance, the Coton's fluffy, cotton-like coat does not require a lot of grooming - a thorough weekly brushing is adequate, and again, shedding is minimal. A great choice for fastidious housekeepers and allergy sufferers alike! Cotons are indoor pets, and do not require a lot of exercise to stay happy and healthy. The breed also makes an effective watchdog.

Coton de Tulear Puppies for Sale & Adoption Near You

Today's Dachshund has been classified in several sub-categories: standard and miniature, smooth-haired, long-haired and wire-haired. Although the breed is classified under the Hound group, they are more like a terrier in working ability with the appearance and voice of a hound. French Bulldog Puppies For Sale & Adoption Near You
About the French Bulldog Breed: It's pretty hard not to fall in love with this adorable, "bat-eared", "farty and foolhardy" French cousin of the English Bulldog! The French Bulldog or "Frenchie" was developed in France from Miniature Bulldogs which were brought over from Nottingham, England, and crossed with local breeds to create the dog known as the "Bouldogue Francais", and were a favored canine companion of Parisian "Ladies of the Night". These sweet little snub-nosed characters make exceptional family pets and great watchdogs! French Bulldogs are small to medium dogs that stand up to 12 1/2 inches at the shoulder and can weigh up to 27 1/2 pounds. French Bulldogs love to eat, so their diet should be monitored to keep them from becoming overweight. They have a short, smooth coat that is easy to care for and comes in shades of fawn, brindle, solid white and brindle and white. French Bulldogs are a great choice for less-active dog lovers since their exercise needs are moderate. Well-mannered and intelligent, French Bulldogs are not barkers. They do tend to snore, though! French Bulldog Breed History: Standard-sized Bulldogs in England were used to develop a miniature version. During the mid-19th century the diminutive Bulldog was a popular family pet in the English midlands where lacemaking was a local industry. When English lacemakers emigrated to France in search of better pay, they took the miniature Bulldogs with them and eventually crossed them with local breeds. The result was a breed known as the Bouldogue Français or French Bulldog. At first, two ear types were acceptable - the typical Bulldog rose ear and the upright 'bat' ear, which prevailed as the correct ear for the French Bulldog. French Bulldog Breed Description: Height/Weight: The French Bulldog ranges in size from 18-28 lb (8-12.5 kg). Coat: The French Bulldog coat is moderately fine, short and smooth. Color: Acceptable colors for the French Bulldog are brindle, fawn, cream, white, brindle-and-white, brindle pied, black-masked fawn and any color except those that constitute a disqualification. French Bulldog Breed Temperament: The French Bulldog is a quiet and well-mannered dog. He is not given to unnecessary barking. However, as with other short-nosed breeds, French Bulldogs may snort or snore. French Bulldog Breed Exercise Requirements: The French Bulldog makes an excellent house pet for the less active owner. His exercise needs are moderate. French Bulldog Breed Grooming Requirements: Grooming your French Bulldog is quick and easy. Wipe him down every so often, trim nails, and make sure ears are clean. It's also a good idea to keep dirt and dead skin from accumulating in the deep folds around Frenchie's adorable smooshed-in (Brachycephalic) snout. Life Expectancy: 10 to 12 Years Good with Children: Yes Dog Breed Group: Non Sporting Group Size Group: Small to Medium

This handsome, bearded dog has a wiry double coat which comes in either black or salt and pepper, and stands from 25 1/2 to 27 1/2 inches at the shoulder. Giant Schnauzers are very intelligent, alert, loyal and obedient. They do very well in obedience and agility training. Due to it's wiry texture, the coat requires some professional grooming to retain it's pattern and texture, although pets can also be clippered to soften the coat. Giants are energetic and spirited and require plenty of daily exercise. They do well in the country or in the city, provided they have a large yard with lots of room to romp!

The Golden Retriever was recognized as a pure breed by the English Kennel Club in 1913, and has since found it's way into the hearts and homes of dog lovers world-wide. Extremely loveable, well-mannered and eager-to-please, Golden Retrievers excel in field trials, hunting, tracking, agility and obedience. Golden Retrievers do best in homes with a large yard or country homes where they are given plenty of outdoor exercise. If you are looking for a fantastic family dog, you can't go wrong with a Golden Retriever puppy - there's a reason they are North America's #1 dog breed! Golden Retriever Breed History: The most glamorous of the retriever family, the Golden Retriever was developed in the mid-19th century by a Scotsman, Sir Dudley Majoribanks, later Lord Tweedmouth. The romantic story that first unfolded concerned Sir Dudley visiting a circus and being so taken with a troupe of Russian sheepdogs that he bought them all. But when his breeding records were made public, they revealed the Golden Retriever was all sporting blood. It had been created by crossing the wavy-coated Retriever with the yellow Tweed Water Spaniel. The offspring were crossed with the Irish Setter and the sandy-coloured Bloodhound. Line breeding finally created the Golden. It was first granted breed status in Britain in 1913. Among the most ingratiating of breeds, the Golden Retriever's manners win friends for him wherever he's seen. Less shedding and highly intelligent, it surpasses both the Standard Poodle or the Labrador from which it is bred. Thus began the quest to find more non allergic dogs which could be trained for Guide Dog work. After a long and unsuccessful search for a suitable Standard Poodle, Harley the Standard Poodle was mated with Brandy the female Labrador Retriever with a proven ability to produce Guide Dogs. Maltese Puppies For Sale & Adoption Near You
!This beautiful little dog can be seen in art objects dating back as far as 3,000 years! The Maltese dog breed's exact origins are uncertain - they may have obtained their name from the Island of Malta, or from the Italian town of Melita. Maltese dog fanciers were widespread throughout most of continental Europe, and Maltese dogs were especially popular in Britain during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603), having been brought to Britain at the time of the Roman invasion or by returning Crusaders. The Maltese dog was one of the first of the purebreds to be exhibited at dog shows in North America. The Maltese dog is affectionate, intelligent and sturdy, and loves to romp and play - especially with children. This tiny breed measures up to 10 inches at the shoulder and weighs up to seven pounds maximum. The Maltese dog has a gorgeous, long, pure-white, silky coat that hangs straight to the ground from a center part running from nose to tip of tail. It's expressive dark eyes and dark nose, lips and eye rims enhance the Maltese dog's exquisite face. Grooming requirements for the Maltese are fairly intensive - the coat needs daily brushing to stay tangle-free and frequent bathing to keep it sparkling white, even if you choose to give it a shorter 'pet' trim. The Maltese dog is a great choice for elderly or disabled people, since it's exercise needs are minimal. A wonderful choice for apartment dwellers too! Maltese Breed History: The Maltese dog is believed to be the oldest European Toy breed. Art objects dating back 3,000 years bear likenesses of the dainty little dogs. The Maltese dog was described in writings of 200 BC under the Latin name of Canis Melitaeus, which may refer to the island of Malta or to the Sicilian town of Melita. From early times, the Maltese dog breed appears to have been known and admired throughout Europe and often had its portrait painted as it lounged on the laps of aristocratic ladies. It was also well known in Britain at the time of Elizabeth I (1558-1603). Some historians claim the Maltese dog breed was brought by Roman invaders while others theorize returning Crusaders brought the small charmers back as gifts for their ladies. Maltese Breed Description: Height/Weight: The Maltese dog should weigh under 7 lb (3 kg) with 4-6 lb (2-3 kg) being considered ideal. Height may be up to 10 in (25 cm) at the shoulder. Coat: The Maltese single coat (no undercoat) is flat, silky and hangs straight to the ground from a centre part running from nose to tip of tail. Color: The glamorous Maltese coat is white. Dark, luminous eyes and pigmentation of nose, lips and eye rims enhance the breed's beautiful expression. Maltese Breed Temperament: The Maltese dog is said to be among the gentlest mannered of all little dogs. The breed is intelligent, affectionate and seemingly fearless. Miniature Pinscher Puppies For Sale & Adoption Near You
Despite the uncanny - yet miniaturized - resemblance to the Doberman Pinscher, the Miniature Pinscher is actually a much older breed, well-known in it's native Germany for more than 300 years. Originally developed from a cross between the German Smooth-Haired Pinscher and a number of smaller breeds (the Italian Greyhound and Smooth-Haired Dachshund are considered to be among them), this tiny breed is also referred to as Reh Pinscher after it's resemblance to a small species of deer by that name. Miniature Pinschers were originally used to hunt rats and other vermin, and will still give the cat a run for it's money in the mousing department. Nowadays, however, the Miniature Pinscher is bred for one purpose: to be a loving, devoted family pet - a job at which it truly excels. Although these adorable little dogs appear quite fragile, they are actually fairly rugged, making them a suitable playmate for children. They stand from 10 to 12 inches at the shoulder and have erect (usually cropped) ears and a very distinctive (and cute!) hackney gait which enthralls spectators at dog shows. The short, shiny and smooth coat requires very minimal grooming, and comes in shades of solid red, or black or brown with rich tan markings. Miniature Pinscher make wonderful pets for elderly or disabled dog lovers as they require minimal exercise. Minpins thrive on human companionship and require a devoted owner with plenty of love and attention to offer.
Miniature Schnauzer Puppies For Sale & Adoption Near You
Despite it's rather diminutive size, the Miniature Schnauzer is a sturdy, muscular dog with the "heart" of a much larger breed. Originating in Germany, the Miniature Schnauzer was originally bred as a small farm dog to "go to ground" in order to keep vermin populations down. Today's Miniature Schnauzer still enjoys the pursuit of tiny vermin, and can be counted upon as a great mouser, putting many cats to shame. These adorable little dogs are playful, perky, friendly, affectionate and very devoted to their owners. They adapt well to almost any living arrangements, country or city, and their minimal exercise needs makes them an excellent choice for dog lovers with limited mobility. Mini Schnauzers thrive on attention and love nothing more than to be by your side, and they adore children. They are very easy to train and excel in obedience classes. Despite their size, Minature Schnauzers make wonderful watch dogs. They require regular brushing and an occasional trip to the groomers for a trim to keep the distinctively handsome appearance. These little dogs do not shed, making them a good choice for dog-lovers with allergies. Make sure you have your Miniature Schnauzer on a leash when you walk him or in a well-fenced yard if left outside - his desire to pursue mice and rodents may lead him into trouble if the opportunity arises.

Newfoundland Dog Puppies For Sale & Adoption Near You
For centuries, the large, friendly, devoted dogs known as Newfoundlands have worked diligently on their home island of Newfoundland in the far east of Canada, working alongside fishermen as rescue and working dogs. These web-footed, water-loving dogs have a natural instinct for water rescue. There are many stories of Newfoundland dogs pulling their owners out of the cold and rough Atlantic waters to safety, aided by their thick, water repellant coat, webbed paws, and tremendous strength, endurance and intelligence. It is thought that the Newfoundland dog descended from Tibetan Mastiffs who migrated to Newfoundland many centuries ago and were later bred with Viking Bear Dogs brought to the island by Leif Eriksson in the 1100's. Fast becoming one of North America's most popular family dog breeds, Newfoundland dogs are very devoted to their owners and love being part of large families with children. They have a dense, oily double coat which requires daily grooming. Newfoundland dogs need plenty of daily exercise - and love to swim. Newfoundland dogs do not enjoy hot weather, and do best in cooler climates. Country of Origin:

Known as "the Bobtail" in Britain where this breed originated about 200 years ago, the Old English Sheepdog is thought to descend from a variety of European herding breeds. It was originally developed by sheep farmers in the English West country to herd and drive sheep to market. The practice of cropping the tail was started in order to identify the breed as a working dog, which made it's owner exempt from taxes. These highly intelligent, highly adorable dogs can also be used as a soft-mouthed retriever with the proper training. Old English Sheepdogs are broad and robust with a long, harsh, shaggy coat for which the breed is renowned. The coat comes in shades of grey, grizzle, blue or blue merled with or without white markings. Old English Sheepdogs are wonderful family pets who love children and will play with and mind (herd?) them form hours! Despite their size, these dogs are very agile, measuring from 22 inches and up from the shoulder with females measuring slightly less. If kept long, the coat needs a thorough daily brushing to keep it shiny and tangle-free. It can also be kept short and easy to care for with regular trips to the groomer for trimming - a great way to keep your dog cool in the hot summer months. Old English Sheepdogs are dependable family protectors, and are best suited to country living and plenty of room to run out of doors.

The white blaze that runs down the top of the Papillon's head adds to the butterfly appearance. If you are thinking about adding a Papillon puppy to your family, you can be assured of getting a very dainty, lively, clean and affectionate pet, measuring from just eight to 11 inches at the shoulder. The Rat Terrier is a truly American breed! These adorable little dogs descended from the terriers brought to the US by English miners and other working class immigrants; probably crosses between the Smooth Fox Terrier, the Manchester Terrier and the now extinct white English Terrier. Although Rat Terriers are still used for hunting in many areas (especially the Southern US), they make exceptional family pets that are great with children and other dogs (even cats!). Rat Terriers thrive on human attention and companionship and are enthusiastic participants in any activity you care to share with them. Rat Terriers are alert, intelligent and energetic, making them quite easy to train. They require plenty of attention and daily exercise to keep them happy and healthy. Rat Terrier Breed History: The Rat Terrier is an American breed descended from the terriers brought over by English miners and other working class immigrants. These terriers probably included crosses between the Smooth Fox Terrier, the Manchester Terrier and the now extinct white English Terrier. These dogs were used as ratters, and gambling on their prowess in killing rats was a favorite hobby of their owners. Some of these dogs were crossed with Whippets or Italian Greyhounds (for speed) and Beagles (for hunting ability). Eventually, these tough little terriers evolved into today’s Rat Terrier. The breed was popularized by President Teddy Roosevelt, who frequently hunted with his Rat Terriers. Many are still used as ratters and squirrel hunters, particularly in the South, where they are sometimes known as “Feists.” The Rat Terrier was recognized by the United Kennel Club on January 1, 1999. Rat Terrier Breed Description: Rat Terriers come in four sizes; Toy (up to 8lbs.), Miniature (up to 15lbs.), Standard (up to 25lbs.), and Decker Giants (around 45 lbs.). Most dogs' think they are human, Rat Terriers KNOW that they are! Whether you're active, or a "couch potato", most will adapt to about any lifestyle that you may lead. Rat Terrier's as puppies are very active and will require a lot more time, attention and effort than an older dog, but RT's are usually very sociable and will remain playful and active throughout their lifetime. If you'd consider being "owned" by a Rat Terrier, then this may be the breed for you.. Rat Terrier Breed Exercise Requirements: The Rat Terrier is an active breed and enjoys regular exercise. Sheltie Shetland Sheepdog Puppies For Sale & Adoption Near You
Originating in the rugged terrain of the Shetland Islands off the Northeast coast of Scotland, this adorable breed used to be called the 'Toonie,' which comes from 'tun,' the Norwegian word for the front yard of a farmhouse. This farm dog's job was to herd small flocks of sheep and children, supervising them as they played. the Sheltie continues to possess a strong sense of it's boundaries, no doubt a trait developed from living in the hazardous land of the Shetlands, where it was easy to fall off a cliff with one misstep. Shelties are thought to descend from an Icelandic breed called the Yakkie, (which was brought to the Shetland Islands by whaling fleets), the Norwegian Buhund and the small collie. Today's Shelties are much more attractive in appearance than their ancestors, due to the efforts of British breeders who refined it's type by selectively breeding the Sheltie with a variety of toy breeds. Originally know in dog show circuits as the "Shetland Collie", the breed made it's show debut in 1906 at the Crufts Dog Show. Breeders had the name changed to "Shetland Sheepdog", more in keeping with the breed's working ability. Shelties make wonderful family pets, and are suitable to almost any type of living arrangements, from small apartments to large farms. Exercise needs are moderate; a good daily walk is sufficient to satisfy this affectionate breed. Shelties stand from 13 to 16 inches at the shoulder and have a dense, double coat that requires a thorough daily brushing to keep it smooth and tangle-free. The coat can be black, blue merle or sable marked with white and/or tan. Shelties are hard working dogs that have a strong desire to please their owners. They do extremely well in obedience work and agility, as well as being very good companions that are wonderful with children.
Shiba Inu Puppies For Sale & Adoption Near You
The Shiba Inu is a big dog in a small body! This proud breed goes all the way back to the Joumon period in Japan (before 300 B.C.). In Japan, this breed reigns supreme as the most popular dog - with more than 1 million registered, and is quickly finding it's way into the hearts and homes of dog lovers world-wide. In some ways, the Shiba Inu seems almost like a cat - always cleaning itself and possessing the amazing ability to climb. They are extremely intelligent and are quite primitive in nature, retaining strong instincts to hunt. This breed is not for everyone - they require a strong hand and very early socialization and obedience training to keep their natural aggressiveness towards other dogs in hand. With adequate care and training, these free-spirits make loyal and loving companions and excellent house dogs, and can adapt to almost any living environment - doing as well in a city apartment as in a sprawling country home. Shibas require plenty of exercise to curb their natural tendency to roam, and their climbing ability makes topped kennel runs a necessity. The thick, medium length double coat requires minimal grooming - weekly brushing and an occasional bath does the trick nicely.
Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier Puppies For Sale & Adoption Near You
Origin: Known in Ireland for more than two centuries, the Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier was the poor man's hunting dog, a slayer of vermin, a herding dog and a watchdog. Wheaten Terriers are thought to be one of the ancestors of the Kerry Blue Terrier. The tousled-looking farmer's dog attracted little attention until a terrier match in 1932 when a group of fanciers decided to form a club. Wheaten Terriers were first called Irish Wheaten Terriers, but that was considered too close to the Irish Terrier, so it was changed to the present name. Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers were first exhibited in 1937 and placed on the list of native Irish breeds. In the beginning, the breed was shown in its natural shaggy state but when other terrier fanciers derided them as looking like so many haystacks, the owners began to 'top and tidy' them, eventually resulting in the familiar scissored trim now seen in the North American show ring. Temperament: This is indeed a dog that licked the Blarney Stone. The Wheaten Terrier is a happy, steady dog with an aura of self-confidence, inquisitive and alert. Activity level: A bit more laid-back than many other terriers, the Wheaten Terrier is still spirited, enjoys activity and is ready and willing to learn. He requires no less than a daily brisk walk to satisfy his exercise needs and more will be appreciated. Height/Weight: The ideal height for a male Wheaten Terrier is 18.5 in (47 cm) and weight should fall in the range of 35-45 lb (16-20.5 kg). Female Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers will stand 17.5 in (44 cm) and register 30-35 lb (13.5-16 kg). Coat: The non-shedding, hypoallergenic coat is abundant, soft-textured and wavy. Color: Pale gold to warm honey is the color of the Wheaten Terrier. Darker shading may be found on the ears and muzzle. Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier puppies are born dark in color and lighten to wheaten as they mature. Grooming: Thorough brushing is needed on a regular basis to prevent mats. It takes considerable scissoring skills to trim the coat in the accepted show style.

In order to avoid confusing this breed with the Skye Terrier, fanciers later changed the name to Cairn Terrier. At one time, the small and feisty Cairn Terrier was used to hunt rats and other vermin and keep their populations down. Cairn Terrier Temperament: Cairn Terriers make wonderful family pets. They are active and intelligent and full of fun! Cairn Terriers love to play and are a great choice for well-behaved children (older than 4 is recommended, as younger children may inadvertently harm the small pooch). Cairn Terriers are well-suited for live in almost any setting, from apartments in the city to large acreages.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Puppies For Sale & Adoption Near You
Whether you live in an apartment, or a castle, this regal little dog will reign supreme! Popular during the reign of King Charles II (17th Century England), this adorable Spaniel breed was recreated by British breeders during the 1930's and 40's and have since found their way into the hearts and homes of dog lovers world-wide. These small, loveable dogs are fairly low-maintenance. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are very intelligent little dogs, and love children. They fit in well into most living situations, and thrive on human attention and companionship. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels also get along very well with other dogs, cats and family pets. They do require daily brushing to keep their long, silky coats tangle-free, but are content with one or two short walks or play periods each day. Other Names for the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: Cavalier, Cavalier Spaniel, Cavie, Cavy Common Misspellings for Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: Cavaleir King Charles Spaniel, Cavaleir Dog Life Expectancy: 9 to 14 years Good with Children: Yes Dog Breed Group: Companion Dogs Size Group: Small

Fearless, tenacious and keen of nose, the Dachshund's short stature made it exceptionally adept at routing it's quarry out from underground. Today's Dachshund has been classified in several sub-categories: standard and miniature, smooth-haired, long-haired and wire-haired. Although the breed is classified under the Hound group, they are more like a terrier in working ability with the appearance and voice of a hound. It is thought that the breed may have a distant cousin in the French Basset Hound. Dachshunds make excellent family pets and do well in the country or the city.
Life Expectancy: 10 to 12 Years Good with Children: Yes Dog Breed Group: Non Sporting Group Size Group: Small to Medium
Giant Schnauzer Puppies For Sale & Adoption Near You
Once known as the "Munich Schnauzer" after it's place of origin, the Giant Schnauzer is the tallest of the three Schnauzer breeds. Highly valued at one time for it's exceptional herding and droving abilities, the Giant Schnauzer breed came close to extinction when modern machinery replaced it in the fields. Fortunately the breed was kept alive due to the efforts of breed fanciers, and this wonderful dog has gone on to fulfill it's rightful role as a security and police dog and wonderful family pet, serving with valour in two World Wars.

Originally used as a soft-mouthed retriever for wild game hunting, the Golden Retriever breed has become extremely popular as a treasured family pet and has also been used widely as a guide dog for the blind. Golden Retrievers were developed in the 1800's in Britain - a mix of various sporting breeds as well as Bloodhound to sharpen the breeds' scenting skills. Golden Retriever Breed Description: Height/Weight: Strong and upstanding Golden Retriever males measure from 23-24 in (58-61 cm) at the shoulder and weigh from 65-75 lb (29.5-34 kg). Color: The Golden Retriever is golden, of course, but in various shades of gold. Golden Retriever Breed Temperament: As a family pet, especially with children, the Golden Retriever breed has few equals. The Golden Retriever is noted for being friendly, reliable and trustworthy. In addition to being a gentle-mouthed retriever, the Golden Retriever excels in obedience and shines as a guide dog for the seeing-impaired. Golden Retriever Breed Exercise Requirements: A powerful and active dog, the Golden Retriever does well in suburban or country environments where he gets lots of outdoor exercise, but keep him well-fenced for his own protection. Golden Retriever Breed Grooming Requirements: Regular brushing is the only grooming required for the Golden Retriever outside of the occasional bath. Great Pyrenees Puppies For Sale & Adoption Near You
Also known as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, the Great Pyrenees or "Pyr" descends from the Molossian hounds that date back to ancient Roman times, brought to Spain by the Romans, where the breed became well established in the Pyrenean Mountains on the border between France and Spain. Great Pyrenees are large, beautiful and highly intelligent dogsthat were entrusted with the formidable task of guarding fortresses and protecting sheep from predators, sometimes left alone for days at a time. Highly prized for their working abilities and appearance, the Great Pyrenees were bred pure for centuries, and were even made the official dog of the court of King Louis XIV of France. In the 1930's the Great Pyrenees found it's way across the Atlantic to the US, in the form of some excellent breeding dogs, and has since become one of the more popular breeds, both for work, and as a loveable family pet. Great Pyrenees are large, regal looking dogs that stand up to 32 inches at the shoulder and weigh in the area of 100 pounds. They have a dense, double coat, which makes them able to withstand cold and wet weather when performing their duties. The Great Pyrenees outer coat is long, thick, flat and weather resistant, and there is a dense, woolly, close-fitting undercoat. The white, coat can be all white, or white with badger, reddish brown, grey or tan markings, and needs daily brushing to keep it clean, shiny and tangle free. Great Pyrenees tend to shed a lot, so a good vacuum cleaner or an easygoing attitude towards housekeeping is essential to owning one of these wonderful dogs. What do you get when you combine the stunning good looks and sunny disposition of the Labrador Retriever with the affectionate nature, intelligence and devotion of the Standard or Miniature Poodle? A wonderful family dog known as the Labradoodle! The Labradoodle is the epitome of the perfect family dog. Less shedding and highly intelligent, it surpasses both the Standard Poodle or the Labrador from which it is bred. Country of Origin: Australia Labradoodle Breed History: Labradoodles receive their heritage from the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle. The story began in 1988 when a manager of Guide Dogs, was in Hawaii on holiday and met 'P'. She told him of her dream to have a Guide Dog but this remained unfulfilled because of her husband's allergy to dog hair. She had heard that Standard Poodles had been trained for Guide Dog work in Australia and asked if their was any chance that this could be tried again. The hope was to produce the fine temperament of the Labrador with the non shedding coat of the Poodle. The result of the union was three very cute Labradoodles, Sultan, Sheik and Simon.
Maltese Breed Exercise Requirements: A vigorous canine, the Maltese is always ready for a romp. Its small size makes the Maltese a fine dog for limited accommodations. His exercise needs are minimal. Maltese Breed Grooming Requirements: That lovely Maltese coat needs daily brushing to stay tangle-free and frequent bathing to keep it sparkling white. Life Expectancy: 15 to 18 Years Good with Children: Yes Dog Breed Group: Toy Dogs Group Size Group: Small

Old English Sheepdog Puppies For Sale & Adoption Near You
Known as "the Bobtail" in Britain where this breed originated about 200 years ago, the Old English Sheepdog is thought to descend from a variety of European herding breeds.

Papillon means "butterfly" in French - a name likely given the breed thanks to it's ears, which, when erect resemble the butterfly. The Papillon's fine, soft and silky coat is white with patches of any color or tri-color (black and white with tan markings). To watch a Papillon move, one gets the impression of a proud little dog that literally prances. The Papillon makes an excellent family pet for any size accommodation and is ideally suited to the stay-at-home. Regular brushing and the occasional bath are all the grooming required, and exercise needs are minimal. Because of the Papillon's diminutive size and stature, a Papillon puppy is not suited to households with children under 6 years of age.
