The Standard Poodle breed originated in either Russia or Germany, and was perfected and popularized in France, where it is known as “Caniche” – derived from the French word for “Duck”.
Known throughout Europe as a retriever of waterfowl, the Standard Poodle makes an excellent family pet and sporting dog. The Standard Poodle is closely related to the Portuguese Water Dog and the Irish Water Spaniel.
Well-behaved and eager-to-please, the Standard Poodle loves to play with children and makes a great watch dog, doing well in the city or the country.
The dense, harsh coat requires regular daily brushing and clipping at least 4 times per year. Standard Poodles need plenty of outdoor exercise and are better suited to a house than an apartment.
